The Green Island Rugby Club (GIRFC) is one of the most culturally vibrant, family-oriented, and historically resilient community clubs in New Zealand. Based in the tight-knit suburb of Green Island in Dunedin, the club is deeply embedded in the history of the Otago Rugby Football Union.
Affectionately known across the country as “The Grizzlies,” the club has a proud legacy spanning over 140 years.
1. Foundation and Early Identity (1884)
The club was established in 1884, making it a true pioneer of grassroots rugby in the southern South Island, founded just three years after the Otago Rugby Football Union itself.
• The Palette: The club took the field wearing its iconic, bold colors: green, gold, and black.
• The Home Ground: While the club initially played on various local fields, they found their permanent, sacred home at Miller Park in Abbotsford in 1921. Miller Park has remained the emotional heartbeat of the club for over a century.
2. The Grizzly Culture and “Claws”
Green Island holds a unique reputation in New Zealand club rugby for its unmatched community atmosphere and colorful traditions:
• The Mascot: It is famous for being one of the only grassroots clubs in the country with its very own official mascot—”Claws” the Grizzly Bear.
• The Santa Parade: Demonstrating their massive footprint in local pride, Green Island is uniquely known as the only local rugby club to traditionally enter its own festive float into the annual Dunedin Santa Parade.
• A Social Hub: The clubrooms at Miller Park serve as a primary community asset for the suburb, doubling as a venue for local weddings, birthdays, and civic functions.
3. A Southern Juggernaut (2020s)
While many traditional clubs around New Zealand have faced dwindling numbers and forced mergers, Green Island has bucked the trend entirely through relentless local engagement.
• The Largest Junior Base: The club successfully built the largest junior rugby program in the Otago region (and one of the biggest in the South Island), consistently fielding over 20+ junior teams alongside a thriving senior men’s and women’s program.
• The Ultimate Year (2024): The year 2024 went down as arguably the greatest in the club’s long history. Not only did the Premier Men’s team capture the highly coveted Otago Metropolitan Premier Banner (the championship), but the club’s stellar community health, volunteer base, and sustainability earned them national recognition. The New Zealand Rugby Football Union (NZRFU) officially named Green Island the National NZ Rugby Club of the Year.
Today, boasting a massive membership network, Green Island continues to stand tall as a flagship of modern grassroots rugby, successfully carrying 19th-century traditions straight into the professional era.
