Sub-Union History

South Island Rugby Sub-Unions

It should be noted that none of the surviving South Island Rugby sub-unions operate in the traditional way, they are now involved in combined competitions and J.A.B. administration. The old inter- sub- union rep trophies are still played for by most unions. Nelson Bays and Marlborough are now sub- unions of Tasman, these two unions operate a combine premier grade club championship. North Canterbury, Ellesmere, Southern, & Central Otago are nearest to the traditional sub- union set ups. North Canterbury and Ellesmere play in a two-section club competition with Mid Canterbury. Southern and Central Otago play in a ‘country wide’ competition, as well as their own. Southland now has a provincial wide five division system, but the old trophies are still played for between the clubs, and the four remaining sub- union rep teams.
