Sub-Union History

Kaitieke Rugby Sub Union

The Kaitieke Rugby Sub Union was a historical part of the larger King Country Rugby Football Union and joined the King Country Rugby Football Union in 1933. It was one of the sub-unions that made up the King Country Rugby Football Union, a provincial union based in the central North Island. Other sub-unions that formed or joined the KCRFU over the years included Taumarunui, Ruapehu, Maniapoto, Ōhura, Ōtorohanga, Kawhia, and Taupō. Sub-unions, like Kaitieke, were responsible for organising and administering local, or grassroots, rugby by being a combination of local clubs. At least one club within the Kaitieke area was named the Kaitieke Rugby Club, which was a part of the Taumarunui Rugby Sub-union at one point, as noted in a 1952 match programme. Like many of the original sub-unions, the Kaitieke Sub-union is no longer listed as a separate, active entity within the current structure of the King Country Rugby Football Union, but its area remains within the King Country region. The union’s structure has evolved over time, consolidating to better manage the game in a vast and rural region.
