Sub-Union History

Galatea Rugby Sub-Union

Galatea Rugby Sub-Union – Murupara was the headquarters for the Galatea Sub Union which had six senior club teams. Besides Murupara Club there were Central, Te Rau Aroha, Painoaiho, Galatea and Waiohau. In 1971, the town hosted its first ever first-class provincial fixture when Bay of Plenty defeated Thames Valley 16-11. Galatea was the Cinderella sub union of the Bay of Plenty and usually struggled against the other teams competing for the Te Hurunui Apanui Shield.
