• Early Matches: The first recorded rugby match in South Canterbury took place between Timaru and Temuka at Arowhenua on October 15, 1867.
• Key Figure: Alfred St George Hamersley, a former English international player who emigrated to New Zealand, was instrumental in founding the South Canterbury and Temuka clubs in 1875.

2. Ranfurly Shield Glory & The “Handbag” Incident
South Canterbury has lifted New Zealand rugby’s most prized domestic trophy, the Ranfurly Shield, twice in its history:
• 1950 (First Win): South Canterbury won the Shield for the first time by defeating Wairarapa 17–14 in Masterton.
• 1974 (Second Win): They ended Marlborough’s famous Shield reign by claiming an 18–6 victory, followed by a successful defense against North Otago (9–3) before losing it to Wellington.
• The 1961 French Upset: In a legendary international fixture at Fraser Park in Timaru, South Canterbury shocked the touring French national side 17–14. The match became famous for 56-year-old local fan Hilda Madsen, who marched onto the pitch with a walking stick to hit a French player after he tackled a local player too aggressively.
3. National Competitions & Domestic Trophies
• NPC Lower Division Dominance: Following the formation of the National Provincial Championship (NPC) in 1976, South Canterbury won Division 2 in 1976, 1977, and 1981, as well as Division 3 in 1986, 1991, 1998, and 2001.
• Hanan Shield: South Canterbury is the most successful union competing for the Hanan Shield, a coveted sub-regional trophy contested annually against neighbors Mid Canterbury and North Otago since 1946.
• Heartland Championship Powerhouse: Since the domestic restructuring in 2006, South Canterbury has played in the Heartland Championship. They lifted the Lochore Cup in 2013 and went on an extraordinary multi-year undefeated run in the 2020s, winning back-to-back Meads Cup titles (2021, 2022, and 2023).

• Fraser Park: The union’s home ground in Timaru, Fraser Park (formerly Alpine Energy Stadium), was named in 1926 in honor of two generations of local rugby service from the Fraser family.
