Club History

Zingari Rugby Club

The history of the Zingari Rugby Club in Timaru is a core chapter in the story of South Canterbury rugby, spanning nearly a century of independent existence before evolving into a modern local powerhouse.

Key Historical Milestones

• Foundation (1906): The club was officially established in 1906 in Timaru, joining the competitive ranks of the South Canterbury Rugby Football Union (SCRFU).

• The Club Spirit & Achievements: Throughout the 20th century, Zingari established itself as a stalwart community club. It successfully fielded everything from heavy-hitting Senior sides to highly competitive junior and “schoolboy” grades, frequently finding success in regional formats like the South Canterbury seven-a-side tournaments.

• The Modern Amalgamation (1998): Facing the changing economic and participation landscape of regional rugby in the late 1990s, Zingari made a monumental strategic move. In 1998, the club amalgamated with its longtime local rival and fellow Timaru stalwart, the Star Rugby Club (originally formed in 1888).

The Legacy Today: Timaru Harlequins RFC

The merger of Zingari and Star gave birth to the Timaru Harlequins RFC (the “Mighty Quins”).

Rather than letting their unique histories fade, the modern club actively honors its roots:

• The Colors: The Harlequins jersey features a distinct four-way quarter design using Black, Blue, Red, and Gold—directly combining the traditional colors of both Zingari and Star.

• Community Footprint: Operating out of Ashbury Park and their clubrooms on Church Street, the club has expanded far beyond its original boundaries, integrating a highly successful Senior Netball Division alongside thriving Premier Men’s, Premier Women’s, and Junior Advisory Board (JAB) youth rugby systems.

While the standalone Zingari name is no longer on the senior South Canterbury draw, its 92-year legacy remains alive every weekend in the fabric of the Harlequins club.
