Club History

Westport Rugby Club

The Westport Rugby Club (Westport RFC) is one of the oldest and most successful rugby union clubs on the rugged West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Dressed in their signature yellow and black, the club is a pillar of the community and the historically dominant force in its regional competition.

1. Foundations and Forging a New Union (1886–1894)

Westport RFC was founded in 1886, introducing organized rugby to the Buller region. Its very first inter-club fixture was played on September 18, 1886, against Reefton, resulting in a 0–0 draw on Martin’s Island. To mark the occasion, the local mayor declared a half-holiday so townsfolk could take special ferries out to watch the game.

Originally, Westport competed under the banner of the West Coast Rugby Football Union, which was based further south in Greymouth. However, in the late 19th century, traveling down the West Coast was a logistical nightmare due to dense bush, lack of developed roads, and wild weather.

Frustrated by these travel challenges, Westport RFC became the primary catalyst in breaking away to form a local union. In April 1894, Westport, along with a handful of other local teams (like Cape Foulwind and Addison’s), officially founded the Buller Rugby Football Union.

2. A Golden Era and a New Zealand Record (1963–1970)

Westport quickly established itself as the powerhouse of the newly formed Buller Union, winning inaugural titles at the turn of the century. However, the club’s most legendary era came in the mid-20th century.

From 1963 to 1970, Westport RFC’s senior team achieved an extraordinary feat by winning the Buller Club Championship eight years in a row. At the time, this set a New Zealand record for the most consecutive provincial club championship titles. The record stood for decades before eventually being eclipsed by Paeroa West (Thames Valley).

3. Modern Era and Legacy

Like many clubs in the Heartland regions of New Zealand, Westport navigated the challenges of the late 20th century as local mining closures and industrial shifts caused population declines in the Buller district. Despite these hurdles, the club remained fiercely competitive.

• Championship Legacy: Westport RFC holds the record for the most Buller Club Championships (Senior Shield) in history, capturing the title 30 times. One of their finest modern seasons came in 2020, where they went entirely undefeated, racking up 282 points across just six games while conceding only 41.

• Home Ground: The club operates out of its long-standing home ground at Patterson Park in Westport, remaining a crucial pathway for local players aiming to represent the Buller provincial team in the Heartland Championship.
