The West Taieri Rugby Club is a historic community rugby club based in Outram, a town on the Taieri Plains in Otago, New Zealand. Anchored heavily in local rural history, the club has served as a sporting and social hub for the West Taieri district for well over a century.
1. The Early Years (Pre-1900 to 1900)
• The “Kickists” of 1883: The very first documented whispers of organized rugby (often referred to then as “football”) in Outram date back to February 1883, when local newspapers reported that Outram residents were planning to sport a team of “kickists”.
• Early Iterations: A West Taieri Football Club was temporarily established in 1890 under the presidency of a Mr. Snow. Early games were recorded against neighboring areas, though the 1891 season proved rough — the club played nine matches and lost every single one.
• Official Formation (1900): The modern iteration of the West Taieri Rugby Football Club was officially and permanently established in 1900. It was founded during a lively era characterized by the Boer War, horse-and-gig transport, and the arrival of electricity to Outram’s streets.
2. The South Taieri Connection
In 1946, a sibling club called the South Taieri Rugby Club was formed to cater to players in the surrounding areas. While South Taieri ceased operations in 1958, its legacy remains tightly linked to the rugby folklore of the Taieri Plains, and the two clubs celebrated their shared history during a joint centennial jubilee in the year 2000.
3. Growth of Junior Rugby (1963–Present)
The backbone of West Taieri’s longevity has long been its thriving junior program:
• The Schoolboy Start: On May 2, 1963, the West Taieri Schoolboy Rugby Club was officially born after borrowing £10 from the senior club to get started. Norman Clark served as the first junior president. They began with a single 9th-grade team where eligibility was determined entirely by a player’s weight rather than age.
• Milestones: In 1979, the club welcomed its very first female player, Donna Allison. By 1991, the club’s growing player numbers meant they needed more space, prompting them to fill in a local swamp area to establish a second playing field at their home ground.
• Amalgamation: Over the years, West Taieri joined forces with the neighboring Middlemarch junior ranks. Today, Strath Taieri players travel down to Outram to train and play shoulder-to-shoulder under the West Taieri banner.
4. Present Day
Operating out of their home grounds at 102 Formby Street in Outram, the West Taieri Rugby Football Club continues to field both senior and junior teams. As a classic Kiwi “grassroots” club, it prides itself on a family-first atmosphere, keeping rural rugby alive and well in the Otago region.
