The Waipawa Rugby Club is officially named the Waipawa Country United Rugby Football Club (often simply called Waipawa Country United) and is a foundational grassroots rugby club located in Central Hawke’s Bay.

Key History & Background

• Early Roots (1880s): Rugby in Waipawa traces back to the late 19th century, with the original Waipawa Football Club established in 1883 as one of the founding clubs of organized rugby in Central Hawke’s Bay.

• Formation of United: Over the 20th century, local sub-union restructuring and country population shifts led to mergers between surrounding rural sides—notably combining town and country player pools in Waipawa and Tikokino — forming Waipawa Country United.

• Regional Affiliation: The club operates under the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Football Union (HBRFU) and represents the Central Hawke’s Bay sub-union district.

• Home Ground: Based out of Coronation Park on Harker Street in Waipawa, which acts as a central sporting hub for the rural community.

• Local Derby Rivalries: Waipawa maintains intense, long-running Central Hawke’s Bay derby rivalries against neighboring town clubs, most notably Central Rugby & Sports (Waipukurau) and Otane Sports Club.

• Modern Operations: Waipawa fields active teams across Hawke’s Bay senior reserve divisions and junior “Small Blacks” grades, drawing heavily from local farming, shearing, and trade families in the Central Hawke’s Bay district.
