The Waimea Old Boys Rugby Club (WOBRFC) is one of the premier and most successful grassroots rugby clubs in the Tasman / Nelson Bays region.
Key History & Background
• Foundation (1968): The club was established in 1968 following the amalgamation of two neighbouring Richmond-area clubs—Waimea Rugby Club and Old Boys Rugby Club—to pool local resources and talent in the growing Tasman district.
• Home Ground: Based at Jubilee Park in Richmond, serving as a major sporting and social hub for the wider Tasman/Nelson area.
• Colors & Identity: Competing traditionally in Red and White hooped jerseys, the club’s teams are often known as “Waimea” or “Old Boys”.
• Regional Dominance: Operating under the Tasman Rugby Union (and historically Nelson Bays Rugby Union), Waimea Old Boys is a powerhouse in the Division 1 Nelson Bays / Tasman premier competition, regularly contesting championship finals against local rivals like Nelson, Wanderers, and Marist.
• High-Performance Pipeline: The club has served as a primary feeder for the Tasman Mako NPC provincial side, producing numerous Super Rugby players and New Zealand All Blacks.
• Community Sports Hub: Beyond senior and junior (“Small Blacks”) rugby, the clubrooms at Jubilee Park host touch rugby, netball, and local community events, retaining deep roots in the Richmond and Waimea Plains farming and residential communities.
