University of Queensland Rugby Club

The University of Queensland Rugby Club (UQRC), affectionately known as “Uni,” “Varsity,” “the Students,” and more recently “The Red Heavies,” has a long and distinguished history in Australian rugby.

The club was founded in 1911, when rugby was adopted as a major sport by the Sports Association at the University of Queensland. Initially known as the University of Queensland Football Club, it became an incorporated association in December 1987. The very first winning match for UQRC was a pre-season practice game on May 6, 1911, against Nudgee College, which they won 19-9.

During the periods of the World Wars, the club faced significant challenges, with many players enlisting. From 1920 to 1927, when the rugby union competition was disbanded, University even played in the Brisbane Rugby League premiership as amateurs and continued to play both codes from 1928 to 1935. The Queensland Rugby Union re-formed in 1928, leading to the return of major clubs like UQ to rugby union.

The club’s social heart, “Harpoon Harry’s,” was conceived in the mid-1970s to provide a home base for players and foster camaraderie. While its beginnings were humble, it grew to become a significant part of the club’s identity. The clubhouse officially opened in December 1978.

The University of Queensland Rugby Club is one of the most successful clubs in Brisbane, holding the record for the most First Grade Premierships in the Queensland Premier Rugby competition, with a total of 33 titles, the most recent being in 2021. They have also frequently secured the Doherty Shield Club Championship, awarded to the club with the most points across all grades, colts, and women’s games.

UQRC has a proud tradition of developing talent, with many players achieving representative honors. Over 215 University players have represented Queensland, and an impressive 66 have been selected for Australia (including 7 as captain).
