Club History

University of Newcastle Rugby Club

The University of Newcastle Rugby Club, known as the “Seahorses,” is one of the oldest sporting clubs at the University of Newcastle. The club was founded in 1955, a few years after the Newcastle University College was established in 1951. It began by fielding teams in the lower grades of the local competition. The club quickly progressed, and by 1957, it was competing in the first-grade competition of the Newcastle & Hunter Rugby Union (NHRU). They became a dominant force in the late 1950s and 1960s, winning several premierships. The club’s golden era was in the 1980s when it secured a remarkable four premierships in the space of five years (1984, 1985, 1986, and 1988). The University of Newcastle Rugby Club has a strong record of success in the NHRU, including multiple first-grade premierships. Some of their notable achievements include: NHRU First Grade Premierships: 1959, 1961, 1962, 1966, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1988. 2011 and 2016 Women’s Premierships: The club’s success extends to its women’s team, which has also secured premiership titles in recent years.
