Tritons Rugby Club

Tritons Rugby Club – Bruce Smith has kindly sent me information on the Tritons Rugby Club based in South Waikato. The Tritons wear Red & White colours, the same colours as played in by the South Waikato Sub – Union team, which played in the Peace Cup games at Senior level. They were very similar to the NZ Barbarians (who wear Red Jersey, white shorts and red socks with two white bands on the top). The Tritons were originally White jersey with red trim, and from memory, red shorts. This may have changed in later years. Bruce says that the club was first established, which was the late 1970’s, but will try and verify.

The ‘Waikato Trial‘ news clipping was played between the Tritons and Rovers. The Rovers weren’t a Barbarian club, but I believe the name would have been used because there were two Waikato teams that played in the Northern Roller Mills age group competition. Waikato Rangers were a team picked from the Waikato Southern Zone and the Waikato Rovers were a team selected from the Northern Zone – this was predominately Hamilton players.
