Club History

Tiraumea Rugby Club

Tiraumea Rugby Club first played in 1934, although rugby had been played in the area since the early 1900’s. was formed in the early 1900’s. Players had been travelling from Tiraumea to play for the Alfredton Rugby Club and decided to form their own club. They bettered all predictions in the first year by winning all the cups and sharing the 7-a-side cup. They played in the Puketoi rugby sub-union, part of the Bush rugby union. Puketoi Sub-Union used to have teams from Pongaroa, Coast, Tiraumea, United, Weber, Excelsior (Dannevirke) and Ruahine (Dannevirke). This lasted until 1986, when there were insufficient players for the competition. The Puketoi Sub-Union ceased in 1987 to allow Puketoi Rugby Club to start in the Wairarapa-Bush Senior 3rds. They worked their way to the prems division and found it very competitive with some big scores against them, but still they fronted up the following Saturday as did the local supporters, especially for home games. The Tiraumea rugby club ceased to exist and became part of the new Puketoi Rugby Club.
