Tinwald Rugby Club

Origins & Early History

• Foundation (1895): Founded south of the Ashburton River in 1895, the Tinwald Rugby Football Club is one of the oldest sub-union rugby clubs operating under the Mid Canterbury Rugby Football Union.

• Early Play (Late 1800s): Rugby gained traction alongside other early sports in the region around the late 19th century. Before formal dedicated grounds were developed on Maronan Road, local teams used various Domain paddocks and leased sports grounds around Tinwald.

Union Competitions & Structure

• Sub-Union Roots: Tinwald was a key driver in local Mid Canterbury sub-union competitions, competing historically alongside neighboring clubs like Methven, Rakaia, and Ashburton Celtic.

• Modern Teams & Competitions: The club fields teams ranging from Junior Rugby (Rippa Rugby through Year 1–8 grades) up to Senior B level, as well as a popular “Turtles” Golden Oldies squad.

Milestones & Modern Community

• Centennial (1995): The club celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1995, marking a century of continuous grass-roots rugby in rural Mid Canterbury.

• Facilities & Home Ground: The club’s playing fields are located at 70 Maronan Road in Tinwald. The club operates out of the Tinwald Family Sports & Recreation Centre (on the corner of Maronan Road and Shearman Street), serving as a family-focused hub for the south Ashburton community.
