Established in 1886, the Takapau Rugby Club is one of the oldest established sports clubs in the Hawke’s Bay region of New Zealand. Located in Central Hawke’s Bay, the club has served as a cornerstone of the small rural township of Takapau for well over 135 years.

The Takapau Rugby Football Club was officially established during the early, pioneering era of New Zealand rugby. It formed shortly after the regional Hawke’s Bay Rugby Football Union (1884) was founded.
Central Hawke’s Bay Competition
1890s–Mid 1900s
Takapau established itself as a fierce competitor in Central Hawke’s Bay sub-union competitions, relying heavily on local farming families, shearers, and bushmen to fill its ranks and playing regional rivals such as Waipukurau, Waipawa, and Porangahau.
Centennial Celebration
1986
The club hosted its 100-year centennial celebrations, producing a 40-page historical booklet documenting a century of provincial rugby contribution, community involvement, and local sub-union honors.
125th Jubilee
2011
In August 2011, past and present players, members, and supporters gathered at the clubrooms to celebrate the 125th Jubilee of the club, cementing its status as one of the longest-running rural sports organizations in Central Hawke’s Bay.
