Suburbs Rugby Club Waipa

Suburbs Rugby Club Waipa – In 1934, three local rugby clubs Kihikihi, Ōhaupō and Pirongia combined to form the Suburbs Rugby Football Club as they were struggling to field senior teams. “Finding that each is unable to place a senior fifteen in the field this season, three of the old-established clubs in the Waipā Rugby Union have decided to amalgamate, and enter a team in all three grades,” a New Zealand Herald article on April 6, 1934 stated. “The clubs are Pirongia, Kihikihi and Ōhaupō. The new club will be known as Suburbs and Pirongia will be the home ground. Ōhaupō club’s colours, all black, will be used.” It was a stroke of genius and the newly formed side was very successful. Their first season saw them win the 1934 senior championship as well as the Ballistite Cup, Binnie Cup and Nation Rose Bowl. The club produced five Waikato reps over their two senior seasons in existence – Maurice “Putt” Bell, Walter Bell, Jack Askew, Bob Wynyard and Jim Wynyard. Jim was also an All Black. Bob had previously represented Waikato in 1932, while Eric Bell was a past Waikato rep (1926) and Rodger “Pod” Grace was selected in 1937. All of these representatives, other than Kihikihi’s Wynyard brothers, were out of the Pirongia club.
