Club History

Stratford Rugby Club

Founded in central Taranaki, New Zealand, Stratford Rugby Club (historically known for its iconic red-and-black stripes) has a rich legacy as one of the most successful grassroots rugby clubs in Taranaki.

Key Highlights in Stratford Rugby History

1. Foundation & Early Years (1889)

Origins: Stratford Rugby Club was founded in 1889, the same year the Taranaki Rugby Football Union (TRFU) was officially established.

Home Ground: The club historically played out of Victoria Park Domain in Stratford.

2. The Golden Dynasty of the 1960s

Unmatched Dominance: Stratford experienced its greatest era during the 1960s, driven largely by tough local players from farming backgrounds (milking cows, shearing, and haymaking).

Title Run: The club captured seven senior provincial titles in nine years—including five back-to-back championships from 1961 to 1965.

Elite Talent: At its peak, the team featured up to 10 All Blacks and All Black trialists in a single club side, coached by former Taranaki representative Don Carlson.

3. Record Provincial Championship Legacy

• Across its standalone history, Stratford won 17 Taranaki Premier Championships (with titles spanning from 1937 to its last standalone victory in 1971), making it one of the most successful clubs in Taranaki club rugby history.

4. Amalgamation with Eltham (2017)

The Merger: In 2017, after decades of local rivalry, Stratford merged with neighbouring Eltham Rugby Football Club to pool resources and player numbers.

New Era: Rebranded as the Stratford Eltham Rugby & Sports Club, the unified team combined Stratford’s red-and-black stripes with Eltham’s black-and-white accents.

Recent Success: The combined club remains a power in Taranaki Premier rugby, winning the Taranaki Premier titles in 2024 and 2025.
