Club History

Stop Out Rugby Club

Stop Out Rugby Club was formed in 1922 as part of the Stop Out Club, based at The St Peter’s Mission in Taranaki Street, Wellington. The founder, Reverand Thomas Fielden-Taylor named the boys club Stop Out, after he called the boys “his stop-outs” because they stopped out late into the night to attend the club’s activities. These activities included billiards, ping pong, debating, dramatics, chess, bible classes and sports. The club was formed in 1919 and rugby was included from 1922. The rugby club were forced to adopt red and grey as the club colours as their own colours, red and yellow, were already in use. The club only lasted 4 years due to the lack of training facilities and because the club also ran soccer teams. The club is now based at Hutt Raceway in Lower Hutt and is a Football club, having been set up in the Hutt Valley (by Dick Dunn) in 1931.
