Based in Stoke, Nelson, New Zealand, Stoke Rugby Club is a prominent rugby club in the Tasman Rugby Union region. Today, it boasts the largest junior rugby setup in the top of the South Island.

1. Origins as STAR (1947)
• Founding: On March 19, 1947, the Nelson Rugby Union approved an application to enter a team representing Stoke, Tāhuna, and Annesbrook.
• Initial Name: The club was original registered under the acronym STAR (Stoke Tāhuna Annesbrook Rugby).
• Early Struggles: The club spent its initial decade building momentum, almost folding in 1957 when records showed its total net assets had dwindled to just 13 pounds.
2. Transition & Rebranding (1961)
• Official Name Change: On March 27, 1961, STAR officially relocated to Stoke and rebranded as the Stoke Rugby Football Club to focus on local growth.
• First Senior Team: In 1961, Jack Ashley coached Stoke’s first Senior team to a 6th-place finish out of seven teams, winning two games.
3. The Eagle Emblem (1976)
• In 1976, Stoke adopted its signature Eagle Rampant crest.
• The emblem was adapted with permission from the coat of arms of Stoke-on-Trent, England.
4. Championship Breakthrough & Facilities
• First Senior Title: Stoke captured its first Nelson Bays Senior Championship in 1982 with a 17–0 victory over Riwaka. They went on to secure further championships in 1984, 1986, 1987, 1991, 1996, 1997, 2009, and 2010.
• Stoke Sports & Recreation Centre: In 1982, the club opened its original facility on the corner of Songer and Neale Streets, funded by 13 dedicated members who personally guaranteed loans.
• Pūtangitangi Greenmeadows: In 2014, the club sold its original clubrooms to partner with the Nelson City Council on a modern community hub. Today, Stoke RFC operates out of the Pūtangitangi Greenmeadows Centre, situated directly on their home playing grounds at Greenmeadows Reserve.
