St Peter’s College (Auckland) has built one of the most respected secondary school rugby programs in New Zealand. Competing in the famously grueling Auckland 1A First XV Competition — widely regarded as the toughest schoolboy rugby league in the world—St Peter’s has repeatedly proved itself as a giant-killer capable of taking on much larger schools.

Auckland 1A Premiership Titles

St Peter’s has claimed the Auckland 1A trophy four times:

• 1987 & 1988 (Shared): Established the school as a genuine threat in Auckland premier schoolboy rugby.
• 2000: Won the Auckland 1A crown outright during a dominant season.
• 2018: Captured the 1A title in dramatic fashion, defeating local heavyweights to secure their spot in the national postseason.

National First XV Championships (The “Top 4”)

At the national level, St Peter’s has won the New Zealand Barbarians Cup three times:

• 2000: National Champions (Completing the 1A and National double).
• 2017: National Champions.
• 2018: National Champions — One of the most legendary runs in NZ schoolboy history. Trailing 21–0 against Napier Boys’ High School in the national final, St Peter’s staged an astonishing second-half comeback to win 31–28.

Historic Campus Grounds: “The Cage”

A defining piece of St Peter’s rugby identity is its iconic home field across Mountain Road, affectionately known as “The Cage.” Acquired in 1959, the field sits in an excavated quarry pit below street level. With spectators watching from elevated vantage points surrounding the ground, playing at The Cage creates an intimidating home-field advantage for visiting teams.
