In the Eastern Bay of Plenty, St Josephs Rugby Club (later associated with Whakatāne Marist) holds a memorable place in local grassroots rugby.

Key Historical Milestones

1956 – Foundation: Formed in 1956 to represent the local Catholic parish and broader community in Whakatāne’s local rugby competitions.

1959 – First Clubrooms: Built and opened its first official clubrooms in 1959.

1978 – New Clubrooms: As the club grew throughout the 1960s and 1970s, a major expansion led to the grand opening of a new clubrooms complex on October 14, 1978.

1987 – Pioneer Fijian Imports: In 1987, St Joseph’s made a unique mark on New Zealand rugby history. Coached by Vivian Hahipene, the club recruited Fijian international players Max Olsson and Vesi Rauluni. They were among the very first Fijian rugby imports to play club rugby in the Bay of Plenty and New Zealand.

2007 – 50th Jubilee: The club celebrated its 50th Rugby Jubilee over Queen’s Birthday Weekend (June 1–3, 2007).

Present Connection

Over the years, the senior rugby administration aligned closely under the NZ Marist Rugby umbrella as Whakatāne Marist Rugby Sports Club. Meanwhile, junior sports (including rugby, football, netball, and hockey) continue to operate in connection with St Joseph’s Catholic School in Whakatāne.
