Club History

The Spreydon Rugby Club no longer exists under its original name, but its legacy is a foundational part of Christchurch rugby history.

Here is how its history unfolded:

The 1949 Amalgamation

Up until the late 1940s, Spreydon operated as its own local neighborhood rugby club in Christchurch. In 1949, the club officially amalgamated with the nearby Sunnyside Rugby Club (which was originally associated with the Sunnyside Hospital).

Following the merger, the combined entity was initially known as Sunnyside/Spreydon or simply the Combined club.

Evolution into Suburbs RFC

By the dawn of the 1960s, the club decided it needed a more unified identity that represented its growing catchment area. In 1961, the club officially changed its name to the Suburbs Rugby Football Club.

The Club Today

Today, the history of the Spreydon Rugby Club lives on through Suburbs RFC (now often called the Suburbs Rugby Netball Club).

• Location: The modern club is family- and whānau-oriented and serves the Hoon Hay, Spreydon, and wider south-western Christchurch communities.

• Clubrooms: Their main base is located at the fully refurbished Coronation Hall on Domain Terrace in Spreydon—bringing the club’s physical presence right back to its roots.

• Grounds: They primarily play and train at nearby Hoon Hay Park.

If you look into old Canterbury Rugby Football Union (CRFU) records prior to 1949, you will find Spreydon competing under its own banner, but any modern connection to the club goes directly through Suburbs RFC.

Although not publishing a jubilee book. The club is worthy of mention due to its important history in the Canterbury rugby scene. This is especially so when they were combined with Sunnyside prior to forming the modern Suburbs Rugby Club
