The Spotswood College Old Boys Rugby Club was established in 1964 through an affiliation with Spotswood College in New Plymouth, Taranaki.
• Founding Leadership: The initiative was spearheaded by recent former students (Old Boys) of the college. Mr. A.L. McPhail, the founding principal of Spotswood College (which opened in 1960), served as the patron of the rugby club throughout its entire 25-year history.
• Home Grounds: Initially, the club played its home matches at the college grounds on Omata Road and at Rugby Park. In the late 1970s, through an arrangement with the New Plymouth City Council, the club built clubrooms and changing facilities at Cook Street in Marfell.
Competition and On-Field Success
While the club was active in the Taranaki rugby scene, its competitive profile was marked by key developmental milestones:
• Age-Grade Strengths: The club achieved significant success across age-grade and lower divisions.
• Promotion (1978): In 1978, Spotswood College Old Boys earned promotion to the Taranaki Senior Division One competition.
• Senior Division: Although the club was competitive at the top level, it did not capture a Taranaki Senior Division One title during its independent existence.
Amalgamation to Form Spotswood United (1990)
By the late 1980s, player recruitment and administrative challenges prompted discussions regarding a merger with neighboring clubs.
• The Merger: In November 1990, Spotswood College Old Boys Rugby Club formally wound up its independent operations and merged with the historic Star Rugby Club (originally established in 1889).
• Formation of Spotswood United: The merged entity transferred assets and liabilities to form the Spotswood United Rugby Football & Sports Club Inc., which continues to represent the Western Suburbs of New Plymouth today.
