Southern United Rugby Club Tokoroa

Southern United Rugby Club Tokoroa (SURF) is Tokoroa’s only Rugby club. Formed in 2001, SURF is an amalgamation of Tokoroa and Tokoroa Pirates, formed in 1958 and 1973 respectively. Players come from within a 30-kilometre radius of Tokoroa. The SURF whanau currently fields two men’s rugby teams, 1 women’s rugby team and 18 J.A.B teams. Reflecting Tokoroa, the SURF whanau is a mix of Maori, Pasifika and Pakeha players and supporters. Tokoroa is famous for producing All Blacks, such as Bernie Fraser, Walter Little, Keven Mealamu, Richard Kahui, and Brian Morrissey as well as internationals, Nicky Little (Fiji), Quade Cooper (Australia), Sean Maitland (Scotland) and Isaac Boss (Ireland). Outstanding Black Ferns players Regina Sheck, Toka Natua, and Chelsea Alley also hail from Tokoroa.

Tokoroa had 3 rugby clubs at one time, but the town went through some difficult times. They have now all amalgamated into one club – Southern United Rugby Club. Roy Skedgwell has written a brief overview of the background of the clubs and the causes of the “forced” amalgamation.
