The South Canterbury Rugby Referees Association (SCRRA) has been an essential cornerstone of rugby administration and match officiating in the South Canterbury province for well over a century.
1. Formation & Early History (1901)
• First Official Meeting: The association was formally established in May 1901, when local rugby enthusiasts and officials gathered in Timaru to form a dedicated body to standardize laws and supply trained referees for matches across the region.
• Centennial Celebration: In 2001, the association celebrated its 100th anniversary. To mark the occasion, author Neil Wilkinson published a 48-page historical book titled 100 Years of Rugby Refereeing in South Canterbury 1901–2001.
2. High-Profile Alumni & International Impact
Despite coming from one of New Zealand’s smaller heartland rugby unions, the SCRRA has produced several world-class rugby officials and administrators who reached the highest levels of the international game:
• Colin Hawke: One of New Zealand’s most distinguished test referees, who controlled numerous international Test matches and Rugby World Cup fixtures during the 1990s.
• Dave Bishop: Another renowned Test referee from South Canterbury who officiated at top-tier international level.
• Tim Gresson: Beyond on-field refereeing, Gresson served at the highest levels of global rugby administration, including senior governance roles on the International Rugby Board (IRB, now World Rugby) and Rugby World Cup judicial panels.
3. Operations & Headquarters
• Clubrooms: The SCRRA’s official clubrooms and base of operations are located in the Speight’s Lounge at Fraser Park (Alpine Energy Stadium) in Timaru.
• Community Coverage: The association is responsible for appointing and training referees across all tiers of local rugby—ranging from premier club matches featuring local clubs like Celtic, Geraldine, Pleasant Point, Temuka, and Waimate, down to junior schoolboy/schoolgirl competitions across the region.
