The Shirley Rugby Club (popularly known as the “Light Blues”) is a prominent grassroots club competing in the Canterbury Rugby Football Union (CRFU) metropolitan competition. Based at Burwood Park in eastern Christchurch, the club boasts a rich history spanning over a century.
1. Origins & Technical Old Boys Era (1917–1961)
• Founding (1917): The club was originally established in 1917 as the Christchurch Technical Old Boys Rugby Club (commonly known as Technical or Tech). It was formed by former students of Christchurch Technical College (now Hagley College).
• Early Decades: Tech spent its first four decades building a reputation as a hard-nosed, working-class club representing the city’s trade and technical apprentices.
• The Legend of Dennis Young: The star player of the Technical era was hooker Dennis Young. Debuting for the All Blacks in 1956, Young played 61 matches (including 22 Tests) for New Zealand through 1964 and became one of the club’s greatest sporting legends.
2. The 1961 Crisis & Rebrand
By the end of the 1950s, changing suburban demographics led to a sharp drop in new player recruitment.
• The Rescue: By late 1961, Technical Old Boys had shrunk down to fielding just two senior sides and faced imminent shutdown.
• School Affiliation: On October 16, 1961, representatives from the newly expanding Shirley Boys’ High School approached the club with a lifeline: if Technical Old Boys rebranded as Shirley, the high school would link directly with the club to supply school-leavers each season.
• Official Transition: The club accepted the offer, and before the 1962 season, it formally adopted the name Shirley Rugby Football Club.
3. Modern Era & Legacy
• Home Ground: The club established its permanent headquarters at Burwood Park in Shirley/Burwood, earning the nickname “The Friendly Club”.
• All Black Representatives: Beyond Dennis Young, several prominent All Blacks have worn the Shirley colours over the decades, including:
o Craig Green (1987 Rugby World Cup winner)
o Chris Jack (1990s/2000s All Black lock)
o Steve Scott
• Centenary (2017): In 2017, Shirley RFC celebrated its 100th Anniversary, tracing its lineage unbroken back to the 1917 founding of Technical Old Boys.
Today, Shirley RFC continues to field senior teams in the Christchurch metro premier leagues alongside a thriving junior rugby division.
