Club History

Ruahine Rugby Club

The Ruahine Rugby Club was a staple of country rugby based in Dannevirke (Tararua District) in the lower North Island.

Key Historical Highlights

1. Foundation & Golden Jubilee (1914)

Origins: Established in 1914 in Dannevirke, named after the adjacent Ruahine Range.

Golden Jubilee (1964): In 1964, the club celebrated its 50th Jubilee (1914–1964), celebrating five decades of serving the local agricultural and timber-working communities.

2. Local Rivalries

• For much of the 20th century, country rugby in Dannevirke revolved around a passionate local derby triangle.

• Ruahine competed in intense local matches against its two town rivals:

o Excelsior Rugby Club (formed in 1904)

o Dannevirke Old Boys Rugby Club (formed in 1910)

• These matches drew significant local crowds to Rugby Park on Gertrude Street.

3. Regional Affiliation

• Geographically located in the Tararua area, Ruahine played under the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Football Union umbrella as part of the Dannevirke sub-union structure.

4. Amalgamation: Forming Dannevirke Sports Club

• Toward the end of the 20th century, changing rural demographics and a shrinking player pool across small-town New Zealand put pressure on standalone clubs.

• To consolidate resources and preserve competitive rugby in the district, Ruahine, Excelsior, and Dannevirke Old Boys merged to form the unified Dannevirke Sports Club.

• Today, the merged entity continues to operate out of Rugby Park in Dannevirke as a multi-sport hub, competing in the Manawatū Rugby Union competitions.
