The Ross Rugby Club, based in the historic gold-mining township of Ross on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, is one of the region’s pioneering rugby clubs.

Key Historical Highlights

1. Early Foundations (1890)

• Origins: A local football club was officially established at Ross on April 3, 1890.

• First Meetings: The initial organizational meeting drew about 30 locals, and practice matches were promptly arranged at the local recreation ground.

• Early Rivalries: In its inaugural season, the club quickly established friendly matches against nearby West Coast towns, including second-XV sides from Hokitika.

2. Goldfields & West Coast Rugby

• During the gold-rush boom years, Ross RFC was a central pillar of the local community, bringing together miners, timber workers, and agricultural families.

• The club played an active role in the development of the West Coast Rugby Football Union (founded in 1890, affiliated with the NZRU in 1893). Over the decades, many Ross players earned local representative caps for the West Coast provincial side.

3. Home Ground & Community Role

• Ross Domain: The club has historically been based at the Ross Domain, renowned locally for its excellent surface and picturesque West Coast setting.

• Grassroots Hub: Like many small, isolated West Coast communities, Ross RFC has served as both a sporting outlet and a vital social hub. In modern times, the domain continues to host junior and senior West Coast rugby fixtures and community events.
