Club History

The Roskill Districts Rugby Club (originally formed as Mount Roskill Rugby Football Club) was a long-standing Auckland club rooted in the Central/South-West suburbs of Mount Roskill and Hillsborough.

Key Historical Highlights

1. Foundation & First Merger (1945)

• Origins: Founded in 1945 following the end of World War II to foster community sports in the expanding Mount Roskill area.

• Formation of Roskill Districts: The club soon merged with nearby Hillsborough RFC, taking on the broader name Roskill Districts RFC to represent both neighboring communities. The club made its home at Fearon Park on Akarana Avenue.

2. Giving Birth to Counties Manukau’s Colors (1955)

One of the club’s most famous contributions to New Zealand rugby history involves the creation of the Counties Manukau Rugby Union:

• When the new sub-union seceded from Auckland in 1955 (originally named South Auckland before becoming Counties in 1956), they were short on gear.

• Roskill Districts loaned the new union their Red, Black, and White playing strip.

• Counties adopted these colors, which remain the iconic kit scheme for Counties Manukau to this day.
