Formed in July 1876, the Rakaia Rugby Club is one of the oldest rugby union clubs in New Zealand. Based at the Rakaia Domain in Mid Canterbury, it has served as a central hub for sports and community life for 150 years.
Key Historical Milestones
• 1876 — Foundation: The club was established during the rapid spread of rugby across the Canterbury province, just six years after the game was officially introduced to New Zealand.
• 1904–1952 — Provincial Alignments: Rakaia originally competed under the broader Canterbury provincial structure before joining the Ashburton County Sub-Union upon its founding in 1904. Ashburton County achieved full union status in 1927 and was officially renamed the Mid Canterbury Rugby Football Union in 1952.
• 1967 — Home Base: After decades of using various community venues for post-match gatherings, the club constructed its official clubrooms on Elizabeth Avenue at the Rakaia Domain in 1967.
• 2000s — On-Field Success: After claiming back-to-back Senior B titles in the mid-2000s, Rakaia returned to Senior Division 1 competition to compete for regional hardware, including the prestigious Watters Cup.
• 2025–2026 — Modern Upgrades & 150th Jubilee: Modernized facility upgrades culminated in the opening of brand-new clubrooms at the Rakaia Domain in 2025, setting the stage for the club’s 150th Jubilee celebrations in 2026.
