Affiliated with the Ellesmere Rugby Sub-Union under the Canterbury Rugby Football Union, the club serves the expanding Selwyn District with senior and extensive Junior Advisory Board (JAB) rugby programs.
Key Historical Highlights
• Founding (1919): The club was formed in 1919 by local school headmaster A.F. McMurtrie and resident Herb Prebble. In its inaugural season, it fielded a combined team with neighboring Halswell in the Ellesmere competition.
• City Competitions & Colors (1920s–1930s): After administrative disagreements with Halswell in 1925, Prebbleton briefly withdrew before re-emerging to play in the Christchurch city competition during the early 1930s. During this era, a jersey clash with Christchurch club Sydenham (red and blue hoops) led Prebbleton to temporarily wear red and white hoops.
• Return to Ellesmere & First Title (1936): Prebbleton permanently returned to the Ellesmere Rugby Sub-Union in 1936, adopting its iconic royal blue jersey. Within four years, the club captured its first Senior 1st Grade championship title.
• Mid-Century Success & Facilities: Through the 1950s and 1960s, the club achieved widespread success in regional seven-a-side tournaments. A memorable highlight came in 1974 when the club won the Ellesmere 1st Grade championship. Dedicated club members built the current clubrooms at Prebbleton Domain in the early 1980s, anchoring the top-tier senior team’s return to continuous Division 1 play from 1985 onward.
• Modern Growth & Redevelopment: Rapid population growth in the Selwyn region during the 2000s saw Prebbleton expand to over 30 junior and senior teams. In 2010, the fields at Prebbleton Domain underwent major redevelopment into modern playing and floodlit facilities.
• Centenary Celebration (2019): Prebbleton RFC celebrated 100 years of rugby over Easter weekend in 2019. Two official club histories record its legacy: Steve Maddock’s 75th Jubilee 1919–1994 Prebbleton Rugby Club (1994) and Richard Busch’s Prebbleton 100 Years of Rugby 1919–2019 (2019).
