Club History

Port Chalmers Rugby Club

Port Chalmers Rugby Club (officially Port Chalmers Rugby Football Club) was a foundational New Zealand rugby union club based at Watson Park in the port town of Port Chalmers, near Dunedin.

Key Historical Highlights

• Founding & Early Days (1883): The club was established in 1883. In its opening season, it played its first official match against Dunedin’s Pirates Rugby Football Club and quickly became an integral part of the Otago Rugby Football Union (ORFU) circuit.

• Centennial Celebration (1983): In 1983, Port Chalmers celebrated its 100th anniversary as a distinct rugby entity. To mark the milestone, H. A. Roberts and W. M. Innes published a commemorative club history titled A Century of Rugby at Port Chalmers 1883 – 1983.

• 1992 Amalgamation (Harbour RFC): Following economic shifts and job losses in the West Harbour and Port Chalmers industrial sectors during the late 1980s, player numbers declined. In 1991, Port Chalmers voted to merge with neighboring rival Ravensbourne Rugby Club. The amalgamation took effect in 1992, forming the Harbour Rugby Football Club (the Harbour Hawks).

• Legacy: The merged Harbour RFC maintains dual roots in the community. Port Chalmers’ original home ground at Watson Park remains active today as one of Harbour’s primary clubhouses and match venues. Players affiliated with the club’s history and its successor include All Blacks such as Jeff Wilson, Tony Brown, and George Bower, as well as Black Fern Fiona King.
