Club History

Poroporo Rugby Club (officially known as Poroporo Rugby & Sports Club) is a rugby club based in the rural community of Poroporo, near Whakatāne in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Like many traditional New Zealand clubs formed in the early 20th century, it retains “Football Club” in its historical documentation.

Key Historical Highlights

• Founding (1908): The club was established in 1908 to serve the rugby-playing community around Poroporo and the greater Whakatāne area.

• Cultural Roots & Ngāti Awa Connection: Located within the traditional rohe (tribal territory) of Ngāti Awa, the club has deep ties to local hapū (such as Ngāti Pūkeko and Ngāti Rangataua). Throughout its history, it has served as an important community hub for local Māori whānau.

• Centenary Celebration (2008): In 2008, the club marked its 100th anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, Mere Kingi authored a published history titled The First Century of the Poroporo Football Club 1908–2008, documenting ten decades of matches, administration, and community leadership.

• Modern Identity: Today, the club affiliated under the Eastern Bay of Plenty Rugby Sub-Union / Bay of Plenty Rugby Football Union operates as the Poroporo Rugby and Sports Club, running both senior and vibrant junior rugby teams on its home grounds in Poroporo.
