Club History

Pirates Rugby Club Rotorua

Founded in the 1930s, the Pirates Rugby Club Rotorua was a long-standing local rugby club in Rotorua, affiliated with the Central Bay of Plenty Rugby Sub-Union.

Though no longer operating under its original standalone name, the club’s heritage lives on as a major component of the Eastern Pirates Rugby Sports & Cultural Club.

Key Historical Highlights

Origins & Early Years (1930s–1940s): Formed in the 1930s as a community rugby club in central Rotorua, the club went into brief recess during the World War II era before resuming full operations in 1944.

Mid-20th Century Presence: Pirates established itself in the Rotorua Sub-Union competitions, developing local talent and contesting regional rivalries against long-standing Rotorua clubs such as Waikite, Whakarewarewa, Kahukura, and Ngongotaha.

The 1990s Amalgamation: Facing economic shifts and changing player numbers in the early 1990s, Pirates merged with Eastern Suburbs Rugby Club (a club originally founded in 1957).

Formation of Eastern Pirates: The combined entity adopted the name Eastern Pirates Rugby Sports Club. To maintain a continuity of community roots, the amalgamated club retained the original Eastern Suburbs clubrooms as its primary headquarters.

Modern Presence

Today, Eastern Pirates Sports & Cultural Club operates out of Neil Hunt Park in Lynmore, Rotorua.

The club fields senior men’s rugby sides in the Central Bay of Plenty (CBOP) and Baywide competitions, alongside junior rugby, netball, and touch football teams, preserving the merged legacies of both original clubs.
