Club History

Pioneer Rugby Club

Founded in 1904 (with official competitive play beginning in 1905), the Pioneer Rugby Club is a cornerstone sports institution based in Gore, Southland.
Operating out of Eastern Southland, Pioneer is recognized for its strong community ethos and long-standing presence in the Southland Rugby Football Union competitions.

Key Historical Highlights

• Origins & The Great Split (1904–1905): Pioneer was established following a breakaway faction from the original Excelsior Rugby Football Club in Gore. The club held its inaugural general meeting on March 31, 1905, with 40 delegates present.

• First Matches: Pioneer played its first friendly match against Albion at the Gore Showgrounds on April 11, 1905, followed by its first official match against Wyndham in May 1905.

• Colors: The club originally adopted green and blue in 1905, but changed to its recognizable red and white kit in 1912.

• Early Dominance: The club quickly found success, sweeping the senior, second, and third-grade competitions in 1906 and claiming senior premiership titles again in 1912.

• Wartime Rebuilding: Like many heartland clubs, Pioneer sent dozens of players to serve during World War I (75 club members responded to the call). After the war, the club successfully rebuilt its roster and remained a major power in Eastern Southland competition throughout the 1920s and 1930s, regularly lifting the Wallis Shield.

Club Motto & Culture

The club’s guiding motto is: “Never above, never below, always beside.”

Pioneer has maintained a reputation as a family-first, community-driven club. Over its 120-plus-year history, it has expanded beyond men’s senior rugby to field multiple junior sides, a reserve grade squad, and women’s rugby teams.

Jubilees & Heritage

• 1954: Celebrated 50 years with a Golden Jubilee publication.

• 1979: Celebrated its 75th Jubilee.

• 2004: Marked 100 years of grassroots Southland rugby with a Centenary celebration and commemorative history book.

Pioneer continues to compete in the Southland Premier and Division competitions, remaining one of Gore’s most active grassroots sports clubs.
