The Petone Rugby Club (PRFC) is one of the absolute titans of New Zealand club rugby. Founded in 1885, it is the third-oldest club in the Wellington province (behind Wellington and Pōneke) and boasts a record of sustained dominance that few clubs anywhere in the world can match.

Deep Local Roots

From day one, Petone Rugby has been intertwined with the local community at the lower end of the Hutt Valley, operating from its spiritual home at North Park on Udy Street.

• Māori Connection: The club has always held a deep, multi-cultural partnership with local iwi. When the club played its first official match in 1885, three descendants of the paramount chief Honiana Te Puni were in the starting fifteen.
• The Monogram & Motto: In 1935, during their 50th Jubilee, the club adopted its famous jersey monogram under the guidance of Māori All Black Matt Love. It carries the motto “Kia Kaha Kia Maia”—”Give of your best, be confident in your own ability.”

Unrivaled On-Field Dominance

Petone’s trophy cabinet is staggering. They have been crowned Wellington Premier Champions 38 times and have won the overall Club Championship 42 times.

Two eras stand out as legendary:

• The 1907 Clean Sweep: Petone achieved a record that may never be broken when they won every single grade of the Wellington club competition in the 1907 season. (Ironically, this golden squad accidentally helped birth Rugby League in NZ, as six star players—including captain Hercules Wright—were banned for life after joining the historic 1907 “All Golds” professional tour of Great Britain).
• The Five-Peat (1967–1971): Petone became the first club in Wellington history to win five consecutive Jubilee Cups. The first three of these championships were won under the captaincy of legendary All Black prop Ken Gray, widely considered one of the greatest tighthead props to ever play the game.

The McBain Shield

No history of Petone is complete without mentioning the McBain Shield. Established in the 1930s, this is the annual, fiercely contested local derby match against their neighboring arch-rivals, the Hutt Old Boys Marist (formerly Hutt RFC). It remains one of the most anticipated and highly attended regular-season club matches in New Zealand.

A Factory for All Blacks & International Icons

Petone has produced 30 All Blacks, 3 Black Ferns, and 16 New Zealand Māori representatives. Some of the most iconic figures include:

• Bob Scott: The legendary post-war fullback who is frequently cited by rugby historians as one of the most naturally talented and influential All Blacks of all time.
• Andy Leslie: The hard-nosed Number 8 who famously captained the All Blacks on their tours of Great Britain (1974) and South Africa (1976).
• Tana Umaga: One of the most iconic modern All Black captains and midfielders, who proudly represented Petone during his rise to international stardom.
• Ken Gray: The powerhouse prop whose legacy is preserved at the club via the Ken Gray Academy, established in 1995 to develop promising youth talent.
