Paroa Rugby Club is one of the most culturally significant grassroots sports clubs in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, located just west of Whakatāne at Lawson Park (Huna Road).
Deeply rooted in local whānau (family) connections and closely affiliated with the local Ngāti Awa iwi, the club serves as a major sporting and social pillar for the surrounding community.
Key Historical Highlights
• Founding (1921): The club was established in 1921, emerging out of the rural community and hapū settlements west of Whakatāne.
• Marae Headquarters: In its formative decades, the nearby Puawairua Marae (Ngāti Hikakino) served as the spiritual and organizational headquarters for the Paroa Rugby Club, cementing its legacy as a key centre for Māori rugby in the Bay of Plenty.
• Lawson Park: The club later moved to its current home grounds at Lawson Park, named after Tamarangi Lawson, who was pivotal in securing family land shares to vest the grounds to the club.
• The Tamarangi Lawson Shield: Since 1984, Paroa has contested this prestigious piece of Māori club rugby silverware against Rotorua-based club Waikite (Ngāti Whakaue), symbolizing deep inter-tribal sporting ties alongside other historic trophies like the Ratana Rosebowl and Jack Biddle Cup.
• Centenary Celebration (1921–2021): The club reached its 100-year milestone in 2021, holding its formal centenary celebrations in June 2022 and publishing a dedicated club history titled Paroa Rugby & Sports Club Celebrating 100 Years 1921–2021.
