Founded in 1946, Papatoetoe Rugby Club is a prominent South Auckland club affiliated with the Auckland Rugby Football Union (ARFU). Playing in red, black, and white, the club has been a vital sporting hub for the South Auckland community for 80 years.

Post-War Foundation

1946
Formed immediately following World War II to serve the growing population of South Auckland, Papatoetoe joined the Auckland Rugby Football Union.

Home at Kingswood Reserve

1950s–1960s
The club permanently established its grounds and pavilion at the Papatoetoe Recreation Reserve (Kingswood Reserve / Kolmar) on Sutton Crescent.

First Gallaher Shield Title

1971
Papatoetoe claimed its maiden Gallaher Shield victory, breaking through as premier champions of the Auckland club rugby competition.

Second Premier Championship

2001
Thirty years after their first title, Papatoetoe captured the Gallaher Shield for the second time in a memorable 2001 season.

Move to the Kolmar Sports Complex

2011
Papatoetoe RFC partnered with local sports organizations to establish Kolmar (formerly Papatoetoe Sports Centre), creating a modern multi-sport facility at their home ground.

Club Identity & Notable Players

Known as a proud community club with strong Pacific Island and local roots, Papatoetoe has produced and developed numerous provincial representatives, All Blacks, and international test stars over the decades:

• All Blacks & Internationals: Notable alumni include former All Black fly-half/fullback Luke McAlister, winger Bryan Williams (who played junior rugby locally), and Pacific Island test representatives like Tim Nanai-Williams (Samoa) and Tevita Mailau (Tonga).

• Community Focus: Based at the Kolmar multi-sport complex, the club fields teams ranging from “Nippers” and junior grades through to Senior Reserves, Women’s, and Premier Men’s teams.
