Palmyra Rugby Club

The Palmyra Rugby Club, affectionately known as “Pally,” has a rich history that dates back to the end of the Great Depression in 1933. The club was officially founded in 1934 in the Palmyra district of Perth, Western Australia, by a group of young men who were inspired to take up the sport by a player from the Fremantle Rugby Club.

The club’s origins are rooted in a group of young men in the Palmyra district who, with little money and no jobs, began playing rugby. An inaugural member, Ben Siddons, recounted the story of how they decided to form their own club despite opposition from the more powerful Fremantle Rugby Club. In their very first year, 1934, the Palmyra Rugby Union Club achieved several key milestones, including official registration with the Western Australian Rugby Union and winning a premiership. The club’s colors of chocolate and blue were adopted from a temporary rugby team that had formed at a sustenance camp during the Depression.

Palmyra has a history of success, winning a premiership in its inaugural year and achieving “unparalleled success” in 2017 with six premierships and being named Champion Club by the Western Australian Rugby Union. The club also won the Rugby WA Men’s Fortescue leading Grade in 2023.

The club has grown to be a prominent force in the local rugby scene, with a strong focus on junior development and fielding a wide range of teams, including senior men’s grades, women’s teams, colts, and a Golden Oldies side.
