Club History

The Palmerston North Railway Rugby Club (often referred to simply as the Railway Football Club) is a piece of New Zealand’s rich grassroots rugby heritage.

Foundations and the Golden Era

The club was founded in 1913. Like many industrial or workplace-based sports teams of the early 20th century in New Zealand, it was established by workers from the local railway department. During this period, the railways were a massive employer and a central pillar of the Palmerston North community, making the club a natural hub for local athletes.

The club competed locally within the Manawatu Rugby Union system. One of the most notable high points in the club’s history occurred in 1939, just before the disruptions of World War II. That season, the Railway team enjoyed massive local success, sweeping the regional trophies by winning the Cascade, Morgan, Schrann, and Cafe Cups.

Historical team records from that golden 1939 squad highlight prominent local club figures like Captain B. McCashin, Vice-Captain P. McGrath, and Club Captain L. McKubre.

Milestones and Legacy

• The 50th Jubilee (1913–1963): In 1963, the club celebrated its 50-year milestone and published an official 32-page golden reunion booklet detailing the first half-century of its history, players, and match records.

• The Modern Era: Over the decades, as the corporate and operational structure of the New Zealand railways evolved and smaller workplace-affiliated sports clubs across the country gradually merged to form larger community hubs, the standalone “Railway” club identity faded from active modern senior rosters. Today, its legacy is preserved in the archives of Manawatū rugby history.
