The Oxford Rugby Club, based in the rural township of Oxford in North Canterbury, New Zealand, is one of the oldest country rugby clubs in the region.

Foundation and Early History (1883)

• 1883 Establishment: The Oxford RFC was officially formed in 1883, coinciding with the rapid spread of organized rugby throughout the Canterbury province. It was founded to serve the farming, forestry, and rural community of the Oxford district, located near the foothills of the Southern Alps.

• The First Centenary: The club has deep historical roots, which are well-documented. For its initial 1954 milestone, renowned regional historian O.A. Gillespie included a detailed record of the rugby club’s first several decades in his book, Oxford: The First 100 Years. Later, in 1983, the club published its own official 56-page booklet, Centennial 1883–1983 Oxford Rugby Club, edited by G. Inch and M. Henderson.

On-Field Success & Affiliation

Oxford operates under the umbrella of the North Canterbury Rugby Sub-Union (which feeds directly into the main Canterbury Rugby Football Union).

The club has a proud history of capturing local silverware, battling heavily against neighboring country powerhouses like Saracens, Glenmark, Ohoka, and Kaiapoi. Their most notable modern successes in the senior premier division include winning the coveted North Canterbury Trophy in 2009 and 2012.

Today, Oxford RFC continues to punch above its weight as a vital sporting and social pillar for the district. Operating out of the Oxford Domain, the club features:

• A highly active Junior Advisory Board (JAB), keeping schoolboy and schoolgirl rugby thriving in the rural foothills.
