The Otago University Football Club (OURFC)—universally known as “Varsity”—stands as one of the most prestigious, dominant, and historically significant rugby clubs in New Zealand.
Founded in May 1884, the club was established during a meeting in the campus room of Professor James Gow Black, one of the university’s foundational professors. Over its long history, the club has built a legendary reputation, balancing Otago’s famous “scarfie” student culture with relentless excellence on the field.
The All Black Production Line
Varsity holds a staggering distinction in New Zealand sports history: it has produced more All Blacks than any other individual rugby club in the country.
• The Tally: Across its history, 69 Varsity players have gone on to become All Blacks.
• The Pure Pathway: Out of those 69 players, 45 of them earned their very first selection for New Zealand while they were actively playing for the University club.
• The Elite Lineage: Legendary names who wore the iconic blue-and-gold university hoops include Marc Ellis, Byron Kelleher, Anton Oliver, and David Kirk (who captained the All Blacks to victory in the inaugural 1987 Rugby World Cup).

While Dunedin club rugby is notoriously physical and fiercely competitive, Varsity has historically stood head and shoulders above its local rivals.
The club has claimed the Dunedin Senior Premier Championship title 54 times—more than double the tally of any other club in the province. Their historic local battles against traditional powerhouse rivals like Southern and Dunedin RFC form the bedrock of grassroots rugby in the lower South Island.

What makes OURFC unique is that it remains deeply tied to the Otago University Students’ Association (OUSA). It is a student-driven club, meaning undergraduates actively sit on the board, manage day-to-day operations, and shape the club’s environment.
While the club has welcomed non-student community members for decades, its heart belongs to the student body, blending high-performance academic focus with a famously vibrant social calendar.
Furthermore, Varsity provides an exclusive international pathway: it is the only club in Dunedin whose players are eligible for selection in the New Zealand Universities (NZU) representative team, which frequently tours overseas and competes in tournaments like the World University Rugby Cup.
Today, playing on the University Oval in the shadow of the historic clocktower building, the club continues to serve as a world-class premier environment for young rugby talent arriving in Dunedin.
