Club History

Onepu Rugby Club

The history of the Onepu Rugby Club is deeply tied to the industrial and forestry history of the Bay of Plenty, operating as a classic New Zealand rural sports hub for over six decades before shifting demographics altered its path.

Foundation and Early Decades (1935)

• Established: 1935

• Base: Kawerau / Onepu area, Bay of Plenty.

• Affiliation: Rangitaiki Rugby Sub-Union (under the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union).

The club was formed in 1935 to serve the rural and farming community around Onepu, just outside what would later become the major forestry town of Kawerau. Onepu quickly established a reputation as a proud, hard-nosed country club, heavily supported by local Māori whānau and rural workers.

The Forestry Era and Stability

When the Tasman Pulp and Paper Mill opened in Kawerau in the 1950s, the surrounding district experienced a massive population and economic boom. While newer town clubs emerged in Kawerau proper, Onepu Rugby Club retained its distinct country identity and solid player base.

The Onepu clubrooms and fields became a vital social center for families in the area. In 1997, the club celebrated its longevity and community impact with a major rugby reunion, marked by the publication of a 24-page historical booklet titled “Reminiscing the Old Days”.

Shifting Tides and Final Whistle (2001)

By the turn of the millennium, typical rural club pressures—including farm consolidations, population shifts toward larger urban centers, and a declining player pool—began to take their toll.

• The Final Season: Onepu Rugby Club fielded its final senior teams and played its last competitive rugby matches in 2001.

• The Kawerau Sports Umbrella: Following the cessation of its independent rugby teams, sports in the area increasingly consolidated under the Kawerau Sports Inc. umbrella to keep local sport viable.

Modern Legacy: Transition to Rugby League

Though the original rugby union club dissolved, the historic Onepu Clubrooms did not stay empty.

In 2012, local community members used the old Onepu Clubrooms to establish the Putauaki Stags Rugby League Club. The initiative was started to give local children a chance to play competitive rugby league without having to travel all the way to Whakatāne, ensuring that the ground originally cleared by the Onepu rugby pioneers remains a vibrant venue for grassroots sport today.
