Club History

Olympians Rugby Club

The Olympians Rugby Club was founded in 1950 by Jack Trapski, a well-known King Country personality. In 1948, he had invited the Barbarians to play a local team at Otorohanga. The match was so successful that Mt Trapski convened a meeting to form a club similar to the Barbarians. Initially called the Corinthians, the name was changed to Olympians. The first official match was against the Harlequins at Otorohanga in 1951. The main object of the club is to encourage the game of amateur rugby and the promotion of the ideals of sportsmanship. Proceeds from games are distributed each year to worthy causes, decided by the committee. During the year various requests for assistance are received and the committee considers each application on its merits. Thank you to Ron Cooke for helping provide the information. The Foresters Rugby club represented South King Country (Taumarunui / Turangi Sub Unions) and the Olympians Rugby club represented North King Country (Otorohanga / Maniapoto Sub Unions). Thanks to Kevin Wereta for this information. To view a pdf of the programme click here.
