Nedlands Rugby Club

The Nedlands Rugby Club, affectionately known as “Neddies,” is one of the most successful and historically significant rugby clubs in Western Australia. Nedlands RFC was founded at a meeting on April 5, 1934, in tearooms on the corner of Broadway and The Esplanade. The first team played in black jumpers with a large gold ‘N’ on the chest. The club’s colors were changed to blue and gold in 1962 to align with the original Claremont Road Board. The club’s success came quickly. After a season in 1934, they won the B-Grade grand final in 1935. This led to a significant increase in player numbers and a push for A-Grade status, which they achieved in 1939. Nedlands then went on to win its first A-Grade grand final in 1940. The club faced a difficult period during and after World War II, compounded by some players leaving for rugby league. However, Nedlands endured, winning a notable premiership in 1957. A major turning point came in 1963 with the arrival of Peter Bailey, who is often called the “father of the modern Nedlands club” for his role in rebuilding the club and nurturing a new generation of players and leaders. Nedlands has a reputation for being the most successful rugby club in Western Australia. They have won a record 18 Premier Grade Premiership flags and, as of 2020, had appeared in the Premier Grade finals for an astonishing 37 consecutive years. The club has also won the WA Premier Club Champion award a record 24 times. Since 1951, the club has had a permanent home on the Nedlands Foreshore, a picturesque location on the banks of the Swan River. In 2012, a new clubhouse was completed, providing one of the best sporting facilities in Perth.
