The Mount Maunganui Rugby Club (now operating as part of the Mount Maunganui Sports Club) is a powerhouse of the Bay of Plenty rugby scene. Sporting their iconic green and gold strip and nicknamed the “Marlins,” the club has grown from a humble workplace gathering into one of the most dominant clubs in the region.
Foundational Years (1923)
The club was established in 1923 by a group of young men living in the area. Many of the founding members were laborers employed at the Public Works Department (P.W.D.) Workshops, who had come to the region to fabricate the East Coast railway line.
In its earliest decades, fielding consistent teams was a challenge due to the fluctuating population of what was then a small coastal town—a problem exacerbated by player shortages during World War II. However, late in 1946, the club formally reformed, fielding a full team in 1947 and laying the groundwork for decades of steady growth.
Relocation to Blake Park
As the Mount Maunganui population boomed, so did the club:
• Hinau Street (1963): The club built its very first standalone clubrooms on a freehold section on Hinau Street.
• The Move to Blake Park (1968–1973): Within five years, the club outgrew the Hinau Street facilities. The local council purchased the land, allowing the club to relocate to its current, iconic home at Blake Park.
• The Modern Hub (1973–1980s): Opened in 1973, the new complex initially featured rugby facilities and two squash courts. Expanded heavily in 1981, it paved the way for the club to evolve into a multi-sport hub incorporating netball, squash, and touch rugby.
Rise to Premier Dominance
Mount Maunganui’s modern era is defined by elite success. Since securing permanent Premier status in 2001, the Marlins have consistently been the team to beat in the highly competitive Baywide Premier Men’s Competition, capturing multiple championships:
• Baywide Champions: 1993, 2005, 2014, 2017, and 2022.
• Baywide Runners-Up: 2010, 2013, and 2016.
The Modern Club (2026)
The club recently celebrated its grand Centenary Jubilee (100 Years), honoring a century of coastal rugby heritage.
Today, the Mount Maunganui Sports Club boasts over 1,000 active members. The rugby division remains robust, fielding elite Premier Men’s and Women’s squads, a highly successful Premier Development team, and a roaring Colts division, all backed by a massive junior nursery that introduces local kids to the game at Blake Park every winter weekend.
