Club History

Mosman Rugby Club

The Mosman Rugby Club, known as the “Mosman Whales,” is one of Australia’s oldest rugby union clubs, with a history that dates back to 1893. The club is located on the Lower North Shore of Sydney. Mosman’s first team was formed in 1893. In 1894, the club officially formed as the Mosman’s Bay Junior Football Club and began competing in official competitions. The club’s colors were listed as “Navy with 4-inch Pink Band,” and their first match was played on May 26, 1894. A notable early player was Denis ‘Dinny’ Lutge, who went on to become Mosman’s only dual rugby international, playing for the Wallabies and later for Australia’s inaugural Rugby League team. In 1923, W. H. Kentwell, then president of Mosman Rugby, presented the Kentwell Cup, which became the top trophy for Sydney’s sub-districts rugby competition (now the New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union, or “Subbies”). Mosman won the inaugural Kentwell Cup. The following year, Mosman’s vice-president, James A. Burke, presented the Burke Cup for second-grade teams. The club has had periods of great success, including a dominant run in the 1970s where they won four Club Championships and 24 premierships across various grades. The Whales have also continued to perform at a high level in recent years, winning a number of premierships in different divisions. A few key premierships include: Kentwell Cup (First Grade): 1923, 1927, 1954, 2016, 2019 Burke Cup (Second Grade): 1924, 1953, 1996, 2009, 2015, 2018, 2020 They play in the New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union competition.
