Although the Mid Western Rugby Squash Club was formed in 1946, rugby in the area dates back to the 1880’s. Four clubs played in the area before amalgamation created the Mid Western Club. Those 4 clubs were Mangapai Rugby Club, Waiotira Rugby Club, Waikiekie Rugby Club and Maungakaramea Rugby Club
