The Methven Rugby Club is a bedrock institution of Mid Canterbury grassroots sports. Situated in the rural alpine-gateway township of Methven at the foot of Mount Hutt, the club has been uniting the local farming and alpine community through rugby for well over a century.
Origins at the Domain (1896)
The club was established in 1896 as the game swept through Canterbury’s rural heartland. For its entire history, the club’s home base has been the Methven Domain, which features five rugby pitches alongside modern, central clubrooms.
Showing the true collaborative nature of a small country town, the club operating facilities are shared with the Methven Cricket Club and the Methven Rotary Club under a unified “Methven United Club” arrangement. The club celebrated its Centennial Jubilee in 1996 and its 125th Anniversary in 2021.
Domestic Success
Methven competes in the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union local club competition, routinely fielding squads in the combined Mid Canterbury/Ellesmere/North Canterbury country tournaments.
The ultimate prize in Mid Canterbury rugby is the Watters Cup (the Premier Senior A trophy). Methven has enjoyed several stellar eras, most notably capturing back-to-back Watters Cup and Senior B championship doubles in 2008 and 2010. Their dominant 2008 season also earned them the Mid Canterbury “Club of the Year” honors.
High-Profile Representatives
Despite its small rural population pool, Methven has punches far above its weight in producing elite rugby talent and national triallists:
• All Black Triallists: The club boasts an impressive list of players who made it to the edge of full national selection, including Ted McKenzie (1930s), Alan McLeod, Bill Maw, Ray Ashworth (1940s), Kevin Murphy (1953), and Stan Goodwin (1950s).
• Māori All Blacks: Clem Mellish (1936), Paul Williams (1976), Lee McDonald, and Gary Waterreus all proudly represented New Zealand Māori out of the Methven club.
• Modern Homegrown Talent: In recent years, local Methven boy Dallas McLeod rose through the ranks to debut for the Crusaders and earned his first All Blacks test cap in 2023.
Modern Day Hub
Today, Methven remains a vibrant multi-grade club, fielding a complete pathway from Under 6 Rippa rugby all the way up to Senior Men’s sides. Recognizing the evolving landscape of sport, the club has actively expanded its focus to develop local Women’s rugby programs and hosts popular community touch rugby competitions across the summer months.
